"Political Stuff"
from Artful Muse
by Arthur Fisher
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Today when I sat down to write this weeks column I found myself in a rather awkward spot. You see, I'm a very politically opinionated person and there's nothing I enjoy more than banging on about how incredibly right I am in my beliefs and how very, very wrong (and possibly evil) anyone who disagrees with me is. So before we started this website I solemnly vowed to keep my political views largely to myself in order to avoid alienating any of our readers. Granted, some of my Britain in Decline posts have been fairly political, but come on! I gotta have something.
So, back to my awkward spot. The only thing that's really on my mind right now is politics and this stupid presidential race and all I want to do is bang on that righteous drum of mine until everyone's ears start bleeding; but again, I feel as though that would go against my cherished blogger integrity.
So here's a nice compromise: I'll dust off my aforementioned favourite drum and very briefly bang the living crap out of it, but straight after I'll end this blog by talking about something totally unrelated that you can go ahead and skip down to if you hate politics or my opinion on politics.
Sound fair? Spiffy, let us begin.
**Update** When I first posted this, there were meant to be links, but I forgot to put them in. They're there now, so y'all can see that I'm not just making stuff up.
Political stuff
As a proud card carrying member of the Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy it is my duty to highlight and brutally attack at every turn our number one enemy in politics; I'm not talking about the Democrats, Obama, or Satan. No, I'm talking about the mainstream media (MSM). It's no secret how biased and liberal the MSM in America is right now. Every Republican pundit from here to Atlantis has made that point again and again for years, but never before has the MSM been so shameless about it. As far as I can tell, they've pretty much abandoned all pretence of impartiality, gotten the phrase ‘Obama ‘08' tattooed to their collective backsides, and I'm pretty sure I saw one CNN news anchor actually drool when talking about him.
Take, for instance, verbal gaffs. Nothing makes politics more entertaining then when a well-rehearsed politician who's speaking to millions and millions of people says something like "misunderestimate." It's a riot, and it doesn't matter what side of the political spectrum you're on, verbal gaffs are something we can all enjoy.
So why is the MSM being a total party-pooper by playing down or even sometimes completely ignoring some of Obama's more amusing mistakes? Are they worried that people might actually realize that St. Barack isn't a completely 100% flawless example of a human being?
For example, when he said he's been to all 57 states, I thought to myself "gee wiz, what an amusingly silly gaff. It's a good thing his name doesn't end with ‘Bush' or else he'd have been crucified by the press for that one." But I mean that one's not a big deal. It was clearly just a slip of the tongue as the video shows. It's not as though he totally lied about something like...oh, I don't know, saying he led some committee to vote on something, when in actuality he not only wasn't even on that committee, but he actually voted against the bill in question. Oh, wait, I suppose he did do that. Surely the MSM wouldn't let him get away with that?!
And as for tornadoes in Kansas, are you sure they killed 10,000 people, Obama? Like positive? Wouldn't want to revise that estimate at all?
Yet when McCain gets the Sunni and Shiite's confused, suddenly all eyes are on him and everyone's saying he's old, stupid, and senile.
It's kind of funny really. Liberals are all about bashing Fox News, saying that it's just a Right-Wing news outlet, and you know, maybe it is. But surely we humble conservatives can have at least one news show that supports us. Just one, little bitty show out of the dozens out there that doesn't see this whole "two party" system as having one Republican Party too many.
And Now For Something Completely Different
I am currently writing this blog from the wonderful home of fried chicken that is Kentucky, where I've come to finish up my BA in history. As some of you know, I've already lived and studied in America (specifically Florida) so the whole culture-shock thing isn't such a big deal for me anymore. I remembered from before that things are much cheaper here, that Wal*Mart is your one-stop shop for absolutely everything (including weapons of death), and that pedestrians are generally frowned upon in American society.
That being said, there are still plenty of things that continue to catch me off guard. The main thing that still surprises me, even though it shouldn't by now, is that even in this age of mass-media and ease of world travel, people here are still fascinated by the fact that I'm British. So many act as though I'm from (regardless of what "scientists" say, the PLANET) Pluto or something. It's a very interesting social dynamic for me, especially here in the Middle East of America (which is where it is, although no one ever calls it that for some odd reason) because it's hardly a hot tourist attraction for Brits and so I'm even more of a novelty than I was in Florida.
Maybe I should do some sort of social experiment, where I go out and about with an American friend and see if I get better service from restaurants and whatnot than my friend. If I do, I'll be sure to report back my findings.
