"Time"

from Kaleidoscopic Contemplations

by Crystal Crawford

---------------------------------------------------------------------

The passage of time has always intrigued me, the way that it seems to slow or speed up depending on what’s going on at the moment.  It’s interesting to me that my mental state can so greatly influence the way I perceive my environment, and it makes me wonder whether I might be able to change my perspective on other things as well – if I can make 15 minutes seem like an hour or an hour like 15 minutes, depending on how deeply I engage or occupy my mind… then could I make a hot day feel less hot, or a gloomy day seem less gloomy?  I know that attitude goes a long way in determining how people react to things, but in a certain way, it seems almost comic-book-like that we could alter our own environments by a simple shift of mood or mental state.

In any case, it is nearly October, and I am once again taken aback by the swift passage of time.

With October come many exciting things – the beginning of fall, the first edge of cool in the Florida air, and the anticipation of upcoming holidays.  And for Calliope readers, October brings something extra, as it marks the release of our first full issue on the new website.

We are currently seeking submissions for all sections of the site – fiction, poetry, non-fiction, and Budding Writers – for our October issue.   If you (or anyone you know) are interested in submitting for this premier issue for our new website, please submit by October 1st.  Also, please remember our October writing contest, a chance to share spooky stories in anticipation of Halloween.  The deadline for this contest is October 20th.

Time has crept up on – or rather, raced swiftly past – me, and I’m stunned to realize how quickly the Fall and Winter holidays are approaching.  In the same way, it seems just a few weeks ago that Calliope began.  Yet, here we are, nearing our 9th month.

Thank you, our loyal Calliope writers and readers, for your dedication to our magazine.  We have a lot of exciting growth planned for the near future, and we appreciate your support and enthusiasm as we continue to develop and expand.
